Picture a scientist

The film follows Nancy Hopkins, a biologist at MIT, Jane Willenbring, a geologist, and Raychelle Burks, an African-American chemist. Through their stories, Picture a Scientist shows the human side behind the statistics.

Their testimonies reveal the many forms of injustice and the resilience required to thrive in a male-dominated environment.

For decades, these realities were minimized. Many women had to stay silent to protect their careers. This film finally breaks that silence and calls for collective awareness.

Beyond the facts, the film inspires. It showcases resilient, brilliant, and passionate women, proving that another way is possible.

Synopsis

Released in 2020, Picture a Scientist highlights the discrimination and inequalities faced by women in science. Behind the image of a neutral, meritocratic field, the film uncovers a very different reality: bias, harassment, and lack of recognition.

Directed by Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck, the documentary gives a voice to those too often silenced.

It stems from a simple fact: many women scientists still face sexism daily, in labs and universities alike.
